These startups develop High-temperature gas-cooled nuclear reactors. These reactors typically use highly enriched uranium fuel (usually TRISO), graphite to moderate neutrons and helium as a coolant gas.

Using gas as a coolant eliminates the need for boiling and allows operation at higher temperatures (around 900 degrees Celsius), which increases the efficiency of converting thermal energy into electrical and allows the heat generated by the reactor to be used directly in various industrial processes (for example, in metallurgy).

Another promise of HTGRs (at least those using the Pebble-bed design) is the ability to continuously replace fuel without shutting down the reactor.

Furthermore, HTGRs are potentially significantly safer than traditional water reactors. The internal pressure in such reactors can be made significantly lower than in water reactors (about 40 atmospheres), which also increases their safety. They also eliminate hydrogen and zirconium - the main explosive pairing in water reactors.

The key challenge for HTGR reactors is the production of TRISO fuel, which is currently very expensive.

The only operating HTGR reactor in the world is in China. It was launched in 2023. Its electrical capacity is 210 MW, it uses helium as a coolant and TRISO as a fuel.

The reactor can be scaled into 4-pack power plant thanks to its modular design. Its construction maximizes the use of off-the-shelf components, that can be delivered to the site using existing road and rail routes. The reactor does not rely on any active systems, electrical power or human intervention for safety, i.e. it shuts down and dissipates heat passively (as a result of the low power density). X-energy also produces TRISO-X fuel, which can withstand extreme temperatures. The company also aims to produce power systems for lunar bases.

Valar Atomics develops small modular nuclear reactors using proven high-temperature gas reactor (HTGR) technology combined with safe TRISO fuel. HTGRs are optimized to produce high-quality process heat which is used for industrial and chemical applications, providing nearby partners with affordable, abundant and clean energy. Using TRISO-coated fuel particles and helium coolant, the HTGRs passively remove decay heat without active systems or operator intervention. This design minimizes the risk of core damage even in severe accident scenarios. The company plans to mass-produce the reactors and deploy them at so-called gigasites, where they will power AI data centers, industrial facilities, and other customers.
