Emerald Battery Labs is developing sodium-ion battery technology. This energy storage option eliminates the need for lithium, which is in high demand, difficult to mine and limited in production. Sodium, on the other hand, is much cheaper and is the same element as table salt. Sodium-ion batteries also last longer and pose a lower fire hazard. Emerald operates out of the University of Washington's CoMotion Labs and utilizes the university's clean energy testing facilities for its manufacturing operations.
